Little greenhouses are becoming more and more popular as gardeners are finding how easy it is to start a greenhouse gardening hobby. There are so many more little greenhouse kits on the market today then there were ten years ago. From a simple small pop-up greenhouse to a ‘state of the art’ backyard greenhouse, you can find the same greenhouses used in commercial greenhouse production in a compact size that fits perfectly in your own backyard!

To determine what type of little greenhouse is right for you, you will have to consider how you will use your little greenhouse. People make greenhouse purchases for many reasons. You may want to grow all year so you can have fresh cut flowers and harvest vegetables each season. Maybe you just want a greenhouse to overwinter some of your favorite container plants and hanging baskets. Another possibility is you are simply looking for a way to extend the growing season for a month to get an early jump on spring planting.

Whatever the reason you can find the right greenhouse for you with lots of size and construction options. You also should consider how much of the year you will be able to use your greenhouse. We separate greenhouse into three season categories based on the ability to

heat and cool the greenhouse.

2 Season Greenhouses
Best for: • Fall • Spring
2 Season Greenhouses help to keep frost at bay to add several extra weeks to your growing season. These greenhouses are best for starting seedlings in the Spring and protecting plants in the fall. In very mild climates they may be used for overwintering. Since 2 season greenhouses are not insulated, it is not practical to add supplemental heat to them.

3 Season Greenhouses
Best for:
Fall • Winter • Spring
3 Season Greenhouses work well in most climates from fall through spring. These structures are insulated so that they can be heated for over-wintering and used to start seeds early. They tend to get too hot for summertime use.

4 Season Greenhouse
Best for:  • Fall • Winter • Spring • Summer

4 Season Greenhouses allow you to grow all year. These highly-efficient greenhouses are insulated so that heat can be added in the winter to keep plants growing all year. Plus, exhaust fans can be easily added, which ensures proper ventilation and prevents the overheating that often complicates summertime growing.

So when your ready to dive head first into the greenhouse gardening be sure to consider how much of the year you plan to use your little greenhouse, and look for one that best suited for your climate. With all the styles and sizes to choose from, you will have no problem finding the greenhouse of your dreams!
